چکیده

Sorption kinetics of hydrophobic organic chemicals to and from suspended sediment and soil particles is described by a radial diffusive penetration model modified by a retardation factor reflecting microscale partitioning of the sorbate between intraaggregate pore fluids and the solids making up the aggregate grains. In light of this and other sorption kinetics models, a closed-loop-stripping apparatus with a photoionization detector operating in-line was used to examine the effects of sorbate hydrophobicity, sorbent particle size, and system temperature on solidsolution exchange over times of seconds to days. Our results indicate that a single effective diffusivity parameter, which is predictable from compound solution diffusivity, octanol-water partition coefficient, and sorbent organic content, density, and porosity, can be used to quantify the sorption kinetics.

Effect of heat treatment on sorption of polar and nonpolar compounds to montmorillonites and soils.

Batch sorption isotherms of 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, and tetracycline to organic-free montmorillonites and soils receiving heat treatment (375°C for 24 h) were compared with those to unheated sorbents. Sorption of the nonpolar 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene to soil was lowered after the removal of humus by heating, consistent with the mechanism of hydrophobic partition into organi...

Determination of soil–water sorption coefficients of volatile methylsiloxanes

The sorption behaviors of 4 cyclic and linear volatile methyl siloxane (VMS) compounds between water and organic matter in 3 United Kingdom soils were studied by a batch equilibrium method using(13)C-enriched sorbates. Sorption and desorption kinetics and isotherms were determined for octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), octamethyltrisiloxane (L3), and decamethy...

Sorption of nitroaromatics to soils: comparison of the importance of soil organic matter versus clay.

Nitroaromatic compounds are produced and used in large quantities worldwide and are frequently detected contaminants in the environment. Sorption is one of the fundamental processes controlling the transport and availability of nitroaromatics, but previous studies have focused mainly on sorption to model clay minerals, whereas little attention has been paid to the sorptive interactions with nat...

Influence of organic amendments on the sorption of pentachlorophenol on soils.

The influence of pH on the sorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) onto three organic amendments, char, humic acid (HA) and peat, and the effect of organic amendments on PCP sorption to three kinds of soils were evaluated. The sorption of PCP on these sorbents fitted the Freundlich model well, suggesting that PCP sorption isotherms were nonlinear with exponential coefficient (N) value lower than 1....

Sorption of Hydrophobic Pollutants on Natural Sediments

Ahtract--The sorption of hydrophobic compounds (aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons) spanning a concentration range in water solubility from 500 parts per trillion (ppt) to 1800 parts per million (ppm) on local (North Georgia) pond and river sediments was investigated. The sorption isotherms were linear over a broad range of aqueous phase pollutant concentrations. The linear part...
